Go!

I wanted to write one more "real" blog post before I leave home, but time has gotten away from me so bullet points will have to suffice.

  • A lot of you want to know how one packs for a year. First you get two rolling duffle bags and a good backpack (that fits your computer). Then you take the pile of things you have collected and start stuffing it in. About 1/4 of the way through the pile you realize that you are extremely blessed and have way more things then you need. You become frustrated with yourself and with the suitcases and walk away. Then you come back and realize that there are things in the pile you can live without. Repeat this cycle about three more times and by the grace of God Almighty you come to the day before you leave, realize that this year is about living on less of you and more of Him and miraculously everything fits! Yay! (Trying to gain perspective on your life? Pull out a suitcase and pack for a year. Wow)

  • I leave this afternoon from O'Hare Airport and fly (along with another SCH volunteer) to New Delhi, India where we have a 2hr. layover and then we get on the same plane and fly south to Hyderabad, India (about 19hrs of flying!). I will spend a few days at India Christian Ministries (parent organization to SCH) in Hyderabad for some training and then take a 5.5 hr. bus ride to Ongole. Confused?  Here is a map.

  • Below is an excellent video depicting Victory Home, one of the homes of SCH. It was shot by a World Race team last month and I think it does an excellent job giving a bit more clarity to what life looks like at SCH! Enjoy!

  • Last but not least, Thank you, Thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of you. I am speechless by your generosity. For the funds and words of advice and your interest in this blog and your excitement and mostly for your prayers. Thank you  for taking this journey with me.

The Voice

This is not "fun" video and viewer discretion is advised. But the video gives the back story of SCH and the realities for special needs children in India. It will also introduce you to Sarah Rebbavarapu, founder of Sarah's Covenant Homes. Prayers for the work that God is doing through her are greatly needed.

There will be lice.

"I've got peace like river,
I've got peace like a river.
I've got peace like a river in my soul."
(Now that I have all of you singing along...:-)

I am asked all the time about fear.
"Aren't you afraid...."
My consistent answer from day 1 has been, no.
I have no fears or reservations for this journey ahead.
People might call me naïve or silly for ignoring the facts.
I am fully aware  of the risks and dangers involved in traveling abroad, especially to India.
I am equally aware of the risks of quitting my job and jumping into a career I know nothing about.

This has been God's journey from the beginning and He has but one rule, "Trust me."

I have no idea what I will be doing and
only a very little idea of what life will be like.
I have left my expectations at His feet.
It's better that way. Easier in the long run.
(Clearly, the nurse in Uganda pulling teeth is going to be a life long lesson...)
It's not easy and don't have this all figured out.
I am Type A, firstborn, nurse
who likes to know what is going on before it happens.
It is a daily struggle. A daily submitting of myself that
will only become harder when I am out of my comfort zone.
I have made a conscious decision to leave
this adventure in between the paws of Aslan.
But the peace that floods my soul is a sweet, sweet reward.
It is as if God is saying, "I've got this baby girl. Let's go."
